These can openers are two of the army’s greatest tools. They can be used for dozens of jobs. They not only make a great can opener, but they also can be used as an emergency cutting edge, groove cleaner, screw driver, finger nail cleaner, open seams and many more practical uses. Made in the USA by US Shelby.
P38 Can Opener
The P-38 Military Can Opener is known by some as the “John Wayne” because he was shown opening a can of C-Rations using a P-38 in a WWII training film. Our P38 Can Openers are new, not surplus. They are stamped from cold rolled steel right here in the United States.
These military can openers will work on any size can rim. When the power is out or your electric can opener bites the dust, a P-38 Can Opener will save the day. Originally manufactured for soldiers in the field to open their canned rations, the US P-38 is durable, high quality and has developed a history of its own through numerous wars and military operations.
P51 Can Opener
The P51 can opener is a larger version of the P-38 can openers and was often used by army mess hall cooks to open the big trays and large cans of chow. The P51 Army can opener is a full 2″ long. The added length affords more leverage and doesn’t require as much thumb pressure to use. Some prefer them over the P-38’s because a P-51 can opener will open cans much easier and faster and will last much longer than the P-38.
The P51 military can opener is still in the military can opener inventory today and is currently assigned NSN 7330-01-289-8827. The p51 and p38 can openers are probably the most popular Bug-out, camping, and survival type of can openers, the P38 and its larger variant the P51 are extremely simple very small & light weight tools that can be had for a few dollars. The P38 was designed for U.S. Military C-Rations which came in small cans. These larger can openers are made for cans up to #10 size. While simple and light, they can be somewhat difficult to use, we include simple to follow instructions with all of our p38 & p51 can openers.
